Federal authorities has entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential further challenges.
