Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
